Appeal to all trade unionists ahead of the Senedd election

Please bring this to the attention of your branch or relevant body.

Dear Comrade,

I am writing ahead of the Senedd elections in the hope that you will let your members know about our campaign for working-class political representation.

The capitalist media does not give fair coverage to all parties. For example, media coverage of a recent hustings event in Swansea gave a quote from the Conservative party even though they were not present at the hustings, but did not mention TUSC even though we took part.

In Gŵyr Abertawe and Caerdydd Ffynnon Taf, the Socialist Party is standing candidates under the banner of the Welsh Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC).

TUSC candidates are active trade unionists and explicitly and unequivocally champion the interests of trade union members. Our manifesto confirms that we have much in common with the policies and goals of the trade union movement in Wales.

We believe that, rather than settle for lobbying politicians, the organised working class, primarily through trade unions, but also democratic community campaigns, tenants associations, etc., should be directly represented politically in a new workers party. Unfortunately, Labour no longer fulfils that role.

We’re standing to promote the idea that a new mass workers’ party with the trade unions at its heart is needed to combat the austerity agenda promoted by the established parties. In the absence of such a party at present, we are standing to provide a socialist option on the ballot paper.

As trade unionists, we strongly oppose parties such as Reform and others who seek to divide workers and undermine our collective strength. However, it is the implementation of cuts and austerity in the Senedd and Welsh local government, that allows Reform to falsely pose as anti- establishment. We have to put forward a positive alternative: for democratic public ownership; a future for young people without debt, war or climate disaster; and a united fight for jobs, homes and services to combat racism and division.

I hope you will help us do that. Please consider:

  • letting your members know that in Gŵyr Abertawe and Caerdydd Ffynnon Taf, the Welsh Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition will be on the ballot paper, and that we support your members' policies.
  • inviting our candidates to your events, to discuss or debate political representation and how we advance your members’ interests.
  • making a donation (tusc.org.uk/donate) so that we can take our positive, socialist, trade union message to as many people as possible.
  • stocking our election leaflets.
  • standing your members under the TUSC banner in the 2027 council elections. Provided a TUSC candidate agrees to a minimal set of core policies, they are free to run their own campaign with their own identity.

All Welsh Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition candidates have also pledged that, if elected, they would forgo the full £76,380 Senedd member salary and take home only a worker’s wage.

Thank you for any support you may be able to offer.

In solidarity,

Dave Warren
